What storm damage actually looks like

Most hail damage is not visible from the ground, which is exactly why so much of it goes unaddressed until a leak shows up a year later. Here is what we are looking for when we get on the roof:

• Impact bruising. Soft, dark circles where hail knocked the granules off and compressed the mat underneath. They often do not leak immediately — they leak after the exposed asphalt has cooked through a Texas summer.
• Granule accumulation. Piles of granules at downspout outlets after a storm are a strong signal of surface damage across the roof.
• Creased or lifted shingles. Wind damage. A shingle that has been folded back and laid down again has a broken seal even if it looks flat.
• Damaged vents, boots and flashing. Soft metal takes hail worse than shingles do, and these are the places water gets in first.
• Fence, gutter and siding impacts. Useful corroboration — if the fence caps and gutter tops are dimpled, the roof took the same hits.

What a hail damage inspection covers

A hail damage inspection is not a glance from the driveway. We get on the roof and check every slope, because hail falls directionally and the north face can be untouched while the west face is covered. Hail-damaged shingles show as soft dark bruises where the granules have been knocked off and the mat beneath is compressed — often invisible from the ground and easy to miss from a ladder. We check the soft metals too, since dents in gutters, vents, flashing and window wraps date the storm and corroborate what the roof shows.

The expensive mistake after a hailstorm is assuming the roof is fine because the ceiling is dry. Impact damage removes the protective granule layer and leaves the asphalt underneath exposed to UV.
